Downey Learning Disability

A Downey learning disability can encompass a variety of concerns, but all of them will have one thing in common. Any learning disability makes it difficult for the child to learn as his or her peers do when in school. While statistics through the Learning Disabilities Association of America show that up to 80 percent of students diagnosed with a learning disability have a problem with language or reading, there are a variety of other learning disabilities as well that can make it difficult for these Downey students to make it through school. However, there are a few ways that these students can be helped.

IEP for Children with Special Needs in Downey

First, parents should understand that their child who has been diagnosed with a learning disability should be able to receive an IEP through the public school system and receive specialized help that will help him or her succeed. This is required by law under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. These students are guaranteed a free and appropriate public education.

Second, parents should move quickly as soon as they suspect that their child has a problem. A big part of this is knowing what the signs of a learning disability are and finding a professional who can help. Parents should look out for issues pronouncing words correctly, finding the correct word, remembering basic concepts and performing small motor tasks. In older grades, these children may struggle with math or reading comprehension.

Third, Downey parents who are struggling to find help for their children who have learning disabilities should reach out to a professional who will be able to help them find and receive the services they need to succeed. There is no reason why a majority of these students should not be able to go on to lead incredibly successful lives throughout all areas of society. Many of them catch up with their peers in school, in fact. Others still need additional help in college but are able to graduate and find great jobs.
