School Transportation Issues

School Transportation Issues | Los Angeles Students with Special Needs

The state of California provides specific legal guidelines regarding the transportation of special education students to school from the home. According to the Special Education Transportation Guidelines listed by the California Department of Education, children who are deemed to require special education services are also required to be provided with free transportation if needed. This would include the usual transportation of certain students via school buses along with their general education peers. However, it also includes transportation for severely disabled students who require special vans or lifts in order to get into the vehicle.

Transportation Services Available

Special education transportation needs should be addressed in the child’s Individual Education Plan. This IEP will be reworked at the beginning of every school year and can be revised throughout the year if needed. If parents find that the current form of transportation is inadequate for their child’s needs or if the child’s needs change within the school year, the IEP can be revised to reflect the new needs at a meeting that the parents request.

These concerns can be quite difficult for any parent to navigate and can be particularly difficult for parents who are already feeling pressure from the school district on other matters. Parents often need additional resources to deal with particular demands that the school district makes or with excuses that educators make as to why they cannot honor what was stated on the IEP.

Representing Children with Special Needs

Excuses are simply not acceptable when it comes to a student receiving a valuable education. At Newman Aaronson Vanaman Attorneys at Law, we believe that every special education student deserves a wonderful education that sets them up for the greatest possibility of having a wonderful future as an adult. As we all know, part of this success is dependent on whether or not the child can get to school every day to learn.

We will fight on behalf of these students and their parents or guardians to ensure that school districts do what they need to both in regards to California state law and to the IEP. If need be, we can sit in on IEP meetings or represent the family at the meeting. If the problems cannot be cleared up in that environment, we can take the case as far as it needs to go to ensure that every child has the right kind of transportation to get to school.
