The state of California provides specific legal guidelines regarding the transportation of special education students to school from the home. According to the Special Education Transportation Guidelines listed by the California Department of Education, children who are deemed to require special education services are also required to be provided with free transportation if needed. This would include the usual transportation of certain students via school buses along with their general education peers. However, it also includes transportation for severely disabled students who require special vans or lifts in order to get into the vehicle.
Special education transportation needs should be addressed in the child’s Individual Education Plan. This IEP will be reworked at the beginning of every school year and can be revised throughout the year if needed. If parents find that the current form of transportation is inadequate for their child’s needs or if the child’s needs change within the school year, the IEP can be revised to reflect the new needs at a meeting that the parents request.
